As part of the provincial government's $56.8-million investment to boost enrolment in nursing programs across Ontario, the University of Windsor will receive just over a million dollars.
"Nurses are an integral part of Ontario's health care system, providing life-saving and compassionate care when patients need it the most," said Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security Nolan Quinn. "Through this investment, our government is growing our critical health care workforce and protecting Ontario's access to excellent care, close to home."
Ontario already committed $750,000 to support the inclusion of registered nurses prescribing education into the nursing curriculum at the University of Windsor, Georgian College and Humber Polytechnique.
The $1,000,400 going to the University of Windsor in the latest announcement from Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie will train up to 25 additional nurses by 2029.
"A strong, sustainable health care system begins with the people who power it," said Dowie. "That's why our government remains committed to investing in the nursing program at the University of Windsor, to ensure we're training the next generation of highly skilled, compassionate nurses who will care for our community today and into the future."
According to the government, nearly 100,000 new nurses have joined the health workforce since 2018. Another 30,000 nurses are currently enrolled at Ontario colleges and universities.
