Sandpoint Beach to close temporarily

After nine drownings in the last 40 years, Sandpoint Beach will temporarily close this summer.

Windsor City councillors voted to close the beach temporarily to wait for the coroner's report regarding the latest victim.

After they receive that information, council will re-evaluate the $15 million master plan that was recently approved.

"I think we can do a very, very nice project there that doesn't involve actually getting into the water," said Councillor Jo-Anne Gignac. "Come enjoy the sand, enjoy a splash pad, enjoy a number of other amenities but let's do it in a safe way."

It has not been determined how the beach closure will be implemented.

Ward Councillor Angelo Marignani said he doesn't want to see an ugly fence and numerous signs.

"Moving forward, I will be doing my best to ensure that Sandpoint Beach is a wonderful place for everyone to enjoy. But first and foremost, it has to be safe," said Marignani.
