Singh promises to prevent auto-makers from stripping down Canadian plants

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh visited Windsor Thursday, promising his party will not let companies take equipment purchased with government grants from Canadian factories.

"We invested massively in the automotive sector. I don't want anyone in the automotive sector in the States to think that they can now strip these factories of that equipment," said Singh. "We're going to use every tool possible, to make it illegal to take this equipment out of our country."

The promise is part of the NDP's four-part plan to support auto workers that also includes pledging every dollar from counter-tariffs to support workers, improving employment insurance, and ensuring crown corporations purchase Canadian-made vehicles.

Singh indicated that to continue to support Canadian jobs, any company that wants to sell vehicles in Canada would be required to use Canadian-made parts or assemble some of the vehicles in Canada.

"No company should think they can sell here in Canada if they don't have a footprint here in Canada. If they get rid of their footprint, they're not creating jobs here, they're not selling in our country, they're not selling in our market," said Singh.

The federal election is on April 28, 2025. Advanced polling starts on April 18, 2025.
