OPP officers ticket multiple distracted drivers in Tecumseh

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Essex County say some people are still ignoring the message concerning driving while using their smartphones.

Officers at the Tecumseh detachment were busy on Wednesday morning. Within two hours' time, they cited at least six drivers for using their phones while driving.

"No message, call, or notification is worth risking lives," read a tweet from the West Region OPP. "Every second your eyes are off the road, you’re putting yourself and others in danger."

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation said the following actions are considered distracted driving under the law.

  • Using a phone or other hand-held wireless device to text or dial. You can only touch a device to call 911 in an emergency.

  • Using a hand-held electronic entertainment device, such as a tablet or portable gaming console.

  • Viewing screens that are not directly related to driving.

  • Programming a GPS device by hand.
