LaSalle police warn of text-based scam

Police in LaSalle have issued a warning about a scam that is targeting seniors.

Investigators have been taking reports about the scam, which is currently circulating in the area and claiming to be from Service Canada.

The recipient gets a text message saying that their Old Age Security (OAS) or Canada Pension Plan (CPP) benefits have been suspended due to a recent tax assessment.

"The recipient is told to respond 'Y' for yes to resolve the issue," read a post on LaSalle police's Facebook page. "The text message scam then sends the recipient a fake CPP-related hyperlink, which takes them to a realistic impersonation of the CRA and banking websites, asking for personal information to sign in to the fraudulent website."

Police say that if you receive a text message like this, do not respond to it, click on any link, or provide any personal information.

LaSalle police say if you lost money on a scam, call them immediately.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) does not send text messages.
