Firefighters tackle massive hay bale blaze in Tecumseh

Fire crews from across Windsor-Essex were called to a massive hay fire in Tecumseh.

Tecumseh Fire Rescue received the first alarm at around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday at a farm on the 11th Concession Road, just south of Highway 401, in Maidstone.

Fire Chief Wade Bondy told WindsorNewsToday.ca that when firefighters arrived, a large pile of hay bales was on fire, producing smoke that could eventually be seen for kilometres.

Crews from Tecumseh Stations 1 and 2 were soon joined by firefighters from Lakeshore, Windsor, and LaSalle.

Bondy said as of 10 a.m., heavy equipment was being brought in to move the hay bales so firefighters could continue their work.

Adjacent structures were not affected.

A cause has not been determined, but fire officials believe the blaze may have been sparked by lightning, or the heat that had affected the region over the past few days.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or any livestock being lost.
