Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix opens Friday

You might hear the rumble of engines in Windsor on Friday morning as the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix gets underway.

Practice starts on the downtown track for the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar division at 8 a.m.

The gates also open at 8 a.m. each day of the three-day event.

The first big race of the Grand Prix starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday when the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship gets underway.

Two other races are on Sunday. The INDY NXT Firestone Race starts at 10:30 a.m., and the big event, the NTT IndyCar Race, starts at 12:45 p.m.

This is the second straight year the Grand Prix is on the streets of Downtown Detroit, and more than half of the venue is open, free of charge, to the general public.

The race shut down several roads in downtown Detroit.

Last year, 150,000 people attended the event over three days, generating more than $104.4-million in total spending. The economic impact in the Detroit area was $35.7-million.

The event has committed $13.5-million for improvements on Belle Isle.

Tickets are available at three locations across the venue. They are the West Box Office on Jefferson Avenue near Hart Plaza, the Rennaissance Centre, and the East Box Office behind the grandstand on Woodbridge Avenue.
