Tecumseh Arena to get an interior facelift this summer

You will soon start seeing some changes at a local arena.

Tecumseh Town Council received a report Tuesday night recommending additional work to be completed at Tecumseh Arena.

The total price tag is $2,771,000 and will require the arena to be closed to the public for most of the summer. This includes the $891,000 previously approved for flood damage remediation and replacement costs made necessary by a flooding incident at the arena last year.

Work was already planned to replace the floor, renovate the front lobby, and upgrade the washrooms, but the report laid out additional work, including reconfiguring a staircase.

"The reconfiguration of the stairwell requires modifications to the second-level mezzanine," read the report. "A condition assessment was also conducted on the upper-level program room and washroom and determined that those spaces also require renovation for modernization, improved functionality, and AODA compliance."

Construction will begin in mid-May and end around Labour Day. Staff will temporarily work from the Lanoue Street facility and Tecumseh Town Hall.

The Ecole L’Essor Hockey Academy and the PowerTech Hockey Group will continue to have access to the arena through the end of June. Due to the scheduled replacement of the arena's evaporative condenser, ice pads would have been closed this summer anyway.
