SIU closes investigation surrounding overdose

The agency that oversees police has cleared all Windsor police officers of any wrongdoing in connection to the drug overdose of a local man last November.

The Special Investigations Unit investigated after a man suffered an apparent drug overdose during an interaction with the Windsor Police Service.

According to the report, police arrived at a home in Windsor after the man locked himself in a bedroom with a knife. Officers tried to negotiate a peaceful resolution but did not enter the bedroom because the man threatened to stab himself.

The man then became unresponsive due to an apparent overdose of muscle relaxants.

Officers entered the room to help the man and took him to the hospital, where he spent some time in a coma before recovering.

Special Investigations Unit Director Joseph Martino determined, "There was patently nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer is concerned in connection with the man’s overdose."

The investigation has been closed.
