The province's police watchdog has cleared Windsor Police for their role in a crash on Riverside Drive East last fall that killed two young men.
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit said there were no reasonable grounds the officer committed a criminal offence when three vehicles collided at Riverside Drive East and Glengarry Avenue on October 15, 2023.
The officer spotted a Dodge Charger speed through a red light on Ouellette Avenue at Park Street early that morning and gave chase, only to stop a few blocks away when it became too risky to continue.
However, the Charger sped through a second red light, turned eastbound on Riverside Drive, and collided with a Chrysler minivan before slamming into a Toyota SUV moments later.
The force of the crash split the Charger in two, and a 19-year-old man in the back seat was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was pronounced dead soon after arriving at Windsor Regional Hospital's Ouellette Campus, while two other passengers and a person in the SUV suffered serious injuries.
The SIU's investigation revealed the Charger's top speed during the incident was 145 km/h.
The Special Investigations Unit, an independent government agency, is called whenever police are involved in an incident that results in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm.
