Gordie Howe Bridge to be part of international trail network

When the Gordie Howe International Bridge opens next year, it will become the first international crossing on the Trans Canada Trail.

The network consists of 28,000 kilometres of trails that span across the country.

"This is a first for Canada and a first for the Trans Canada Trail and globally this is significant because we sit on the board of the World Trails Network and Canada has one of the few national trails in the world. This kind of international border crossing is really kind of exceptional," said Eleanor McMahon, president and CEO of the Trans Canada Trail.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge will include a pedestrian and multi-use lane that will be free to use when it opens in the fall of 2025.

The international bridge path will connect the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail in Windsor to the Iron Belle Trail and the Great Lakes Way in Detroit.

The Trans Canada Trail is working with all levels of government to fill missing gaps in the trail throughout the region.

"The Trans Canada Trail is the largest funder of trail infrastructure in Canada so we're going to be at the table with funding and we're going to look to our federal colleagues, the mayor, the provincial government, we're all thinking about how we can contribute to create a seamless ride and walk for people who come across the border," said McMahon.
