Grandparent scammers targeting Amherstburg residents

The Amherstburg detachment of the Windsor Police Service has been getting an uptick in reports of the grandparent scam recently.

In recent reports, suspects pose as police officers on the phone and request to pick up money.

The suspects give a fake badge number and claim to be calling on behalf of a grandchild or other loved one. The fraudster claims the person needs the money as soon as possible to pay bail or lawyer fees.

Police officers say they will never request money over the phone or collect any kind of cash from a resident.

If you receive a suspicious phone call from someone claiming to be a family member you are advised to hang up and contact that person directly.
