Erie Shores Healthcare expands service on Pelee Island

Erie Shores Healthcare hopes to have a more comprehensive plan to announce in the spring, but in the meantime, it's expanding its service to the residents on Pelee Island.

Starting Wednesday, the Windsor-Essex Mobile Medical Support Team will visit the island weekly to provide healthcare like vaccinations, cancer screenings, and health assessments.

There are fewer than 250 permanent residents on the island who can only access the mainland by ferry or airplane.

A nurse who lives on the island will be available in the Pelee Island Nursing Station three days a week starting next Wednesday.

Previously, the Victorian Order of Nurses staffed the station.

"This interim plan is a proactive first step while work continues on a partnership with Ontario Health and the Ministry of Health, with more to come on a comprehensive care model for Pelee Island in the spring," said a release from Erie Shores Healthcare.

"The Pelee Island nursing station holds a special place in our healthcare network, and we are deeply committed to providing the residents of Pelee Island with convenient access to quality healthcare services," said ESHC CEO Kristen Kennedy.
