The second shift at the Windsor Assembly Plant is here to stay.
Following a tweet Tuesday by Unifor Local 444, which represents hourly workers at the Stellantis plant, the automaker confirmed that the shift will remain intact.
"We are happy to announce that we were just notified by Stellantis that they are rescinding the letter to eliminate the second shift," said Unifor Local 444 President Dave Cassidy.
The move affects some 2,000 hourly workers.

After the automaker had eliminated the third shift at the plant in the summer of 2020, the second shift had also been on the chopping block. Originally the shift was due to end this spring, but Stellantis had given two reprieves, with the latest target shutdown date in June 2023.
Despite the decision to extend the second shift, supply problems and the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in periodic shutdowns and shift cancellations. A worldwide microchip shortage affecting most of the world's major automakers was behind many production interruptions in Windsor.
