Severe damage after home in Tecumseh goes up in flames

A burning candle on a back deck is blamed for a house fire on Revland Drive in Tecumseh over the weekend.

Firefighters responded to the call around 6:15 a.m. on Saturday, but Tecumseh Fire Chief Wade Bondy told WindsorNewsToday.ca the flames had been burning for some time by the time they arrived.

Bondy said the fire started on the deck, spread up through the eavestroughs into the attic and onto the roof. It is still under investigation.

Three residents were asleep inside at the time. Smoke alarms woke them up, and they escaped safely.

Bondy speculated the damage was worth $250,000 but said the roof is gone.

Five fire units responded, and firefighters were able to protect homes on either side of the house.

No one was hurt.
