Sandpoint Beach now not recommended for swimming

The City of Windsor's only public beach has had a change in status following a re-test for bacteria.

When the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit conducted its weekly testing at Sandpoint Beach, they ordered the beach closed after high levels of e.coli contamination were uncovered. Following a re-test on Thursday due to the closure, the health unit has now upgraded the beach's status to the "swimming not recommended" category.

Swimming is also not recommended at six other beaches in the region.

E.coli counts of higher than 200 were detected at Belle River Beach, Seacliff Beach, Point Pelee Beach, Mettawas Beach, Colchester Beach, and Holiday Beach.

Bacteria levels at these levels may pose a risk to your health.

Both Cedar Beach and Cedar Island Beach in Kingsville are open for swimming.

Each week the Windsor Essex County Health Unit tests the water at nine local beaches.
