Ahead of the Canada Day weekend, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has recommended no swimming at a Leamington beach due to high e.coli levels.
Point Pelee North West Beach, located on the western side of the Point Pelee peninsula, was originally closed this week after weekly water testing by the health unit uncovered an e.coli count of 1,000, which is extremely high and makes the water unsafe for swimming.
Following a re-test by the health unit on Wednesday, the closure was downgraded to a beach warning, with the new e.coli count at 228. Beach amenities are open, but swimming at the beach is not recommended.
Beach warnings have also been issued for Belle River Beach, Colchester Beach, Holiday Beach in Amherstburg, Mettawas Beach in Kingsville, and Seacliff Beach in Leamington. Beaches that are under a warning do not allow swimming, but other amenities are open.
The remaining Windsor-Essex beaches that are tested weekly by the health unit, which are fully open, are Sandpoint Beach in Windsor, Cedar Beach and Cedar Island Beach in Kingsville.
