Stellantis announces WAP retooling plan

The Windsor Assembly Plant will soon be building vehicles on Stellantis' new STLA large platform.

Stellantis announced the move as part of $3.6 billion of investment committed to the Windsor plant.

“There has been a lot of speculation, and while we’re not prepared to discuss any product details today, we’re happy to confirm that Windsor will produce vehicles on our new STLA Large platform,” said Mark Stewart, Stellantis North America COO. “These announcements represent key pieces of our Dare Forward strategy to provide safe, clean, and affordable mobility solutions for our customers long into the future.”

The Windsor Assembly Plant will be transformed to support battery-electric vehicle capability for multiple models. The move is to allow the plant to have the flexibility to adjust production volumes based on changing market demand. Stellantis said the STLA large platform will manufacture fully battery-electric performance and American muscle vehicles.

The retooling is expected to begin in 2023.

The L-series vehicles like the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Dodge Challenger are currently built at the Brampton Assembly Plant. That will end in 2024 when that plant is retooled. Stellantis has not announced a replacement product for the Brampton plant.
