Calling it a "jewel in the middle of the city," Windsor's Ward 10 Councillor Jim Morrison believes it is time to utilize the South Cameron Woodlot for the benefit of city residents.
The 31 acres of land in South Windsor has just one 400-metre path off Randolph Avenue, and according to Mayor Drew Dilkens, it "convoluted" and "not easy" to use. Housing surrounds the area.
"What we heard from residents is that they wanted to have more options for outdoor activities," said Dilkens. "They started getting out more. We all did out of necessity during the pandemic."
In May, city councillors approved $950,000 for nine projects across Windsor. Last week, the Mayor announced the construction of a cricket pitch at Derwent Park.
Dilkens said the city would hire an environmental consultant this summer to engage relevant agencies. Later this year, a report detailing a pathway plan will go to city councillors for approval, and the 2023 budget will include funding.
He explained the south to north path will be improved with access from the east and west.
However, Morrison wanted to reassure residents.
"We're not talking about major development here. We're not talking about putting roads through," he said. "We're talking about making it very environmentally sensitive, so that people can utilize it, but we're not disturbing the wildlife."
