Leamington man charged with fraud

A fraud case in eastern Ontario has resulted in the arrest of a Leamington man.

The Ontario Provincial Police Frontenac detachment responded on November 16 to a complaint at an address in Central Frontenac Township, north of Kingston. Officers learned that on November 6, a resident was contacted by phone and told they had won a prize.

For the victim to claim a prize, they were instructed by the caller to purchase pre-paid credit cards and other items, then ship them to an address provided. The victim did so, then realized it was a scam and called the police.

The investigation determined that the call originated from Leamington, so the Essex County OPP Crime Unit was brought into the investigation, according to Constable Steven Duguay.

Acting on a warrant, Essex County officers visited an address on Highway 77 in Leamington and arrested a 36-year-old man. He is charged with possession of stolen property under $5000.

The suspect was held pending a bail hearing in a Windsor court.
