By next May, another 945 homes, businesses and farms in Stoney Point will be connected to high-speed internet.Windsor-Tecumseh MP Irek Kusmierczyk, along with Tecumseh’s Mayor and the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced Monday construction on a new infrastructure network is already underway.
“The pandemic really showed us the importance of being connected to high-speed broadband,” said Minister Lisa Thompson. “Families and businesses in these communities and throughout rural Ontario, need these services to do their work – whether its schoolwork or running a business.”
The Ontario government has committed to connect every community to broadband internet by the end of 2025. The new $3.7-million fibre-optic network in Stoney Point will be operational in May 2022.
The province and the federal government each invested over $850,000 into the project, while Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology, or SWIFT, initiated the contracts.
SWIFT is a not-for-profit corporation to address connectivity issues in underserviced areas of Southwestern Ontario. Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara is SWIFT’s Board Chair.
“With work now underway to bring fibre-optic connectivity to Stoney Point, residents and businesses within the community will soon be provided with equal access to economic, social, and educational opportunities,” he said.
