Sandpoint Beach closed due to high bacteria

A popular east Windsor destination for beating the summer heat has been closed due to high bacteria levels.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has ordered Sandpoint Beach to be closed due to a high E. Coli count of 1,000, which could pose health risks for swimmers.

According to the health unit, this is the first time since mid-June that the beach was closed to swimming, though three warnings were issued since then. The health unit conducts water testing at Sandpoint Beach every Monday.

The water will be retested on Thursday, which is the protocol when a beach is closed due to bacteria.

Warnings, during which swimming is not recommended, are currently in place at three other Windsor-Essex beaches, Cedar Beach and Mettawas Beach in Kingsville, and Belle River Beach in Lakeshore.

The remaining four beaches regularly tested by the health unit are fully open -- that includes Holiday Beach in Amherstburg, Colchester Beach in Essex, Seacliff Beach in Leamington, and Point Pelee National Park.
