Potential hazmat situation in east Windsor

Several first responders were taken to the hospital Tuesday after exposure to potentially hazardous material.

Police were called to the parking lot in front of Canadian Tire on Tecumseh Road East around 11:45 a.m. A substance believed to be hazardous was found inside a vehicle.

Windsor Fire and Rescue, along with EMS and multiple Windsor Police units including the Explosive Disposal Unit responded to the call.

Several first responding officers were decontaminated on scene and multiple officers were taken to the hospital for potential exposure to the substance. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

Windsor Police officers are not commenting or providing information on the nature of the call at this time.

This remains an active investigation and officers are expected to remain on the scene for an unknown period of time.

Police are asking people to avoid the area however they say there is no threat to public safety.
