There are no active COVID-19 outbreaks in Windsor and Essex County.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit rescinded the last two outbreak notices as of Wednesday morning.
“Overall, I think this is a complete collaboration between the businesses, the community, the organizations, the high vaccination rate, good case and contact management, outbreak control measures, that has got us to this point,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.
The health unit also recorded five new cases of the virus on Wednesday. Among the new cases, two are close contacts of previously confirmed infections, one case was contracted in the community and one case is travel related outside of North America. Staff continues to investigate one of the cases.
There are now 54 active cases in the region now and 14 of them have been identified as variants of concern.
Local hospitals are treating seven patients who have tested positive for COVID-19.
To date, 73.7 per cent of adults in the region have received at least one dose of a vaccine while 34.9 per cent are fully vaccinated.
The region’s Pfizer vaccine shipment that was delayed has now arrived. However, CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette indicated she still expects Moderna to be the primary vaccine available in the coming weeks.
“Knowing that Moderna and Pfizer are interchangeable, there’s great coverage with both vaccines and there are no worries there,” said Marentette. “In the coming weeks we will get more Moderna than Pfizer so we are preparing everyone that Moderna will be our primary vaccine but we will be using both.”
Anyone who received a first dose of an mRNA vaccine on or before May 9, can now book an appointment for their second dose through wevax.ca. First dose appointments are available for anyone 12 years of age or older.
