Local Unifor groups raised over $16,000 for Harmony in Action to help erect a fence to protect outdoor play equipment.
Over the last several months, the outdoor space at the facility for adults with disabilities has been vandalized on numerous occasions.
"We have no other alternative but to now fence it in," said Executive Director Elizabeth Esposito. "It's going to help us immensely with the cost but the unfortunate part is that there's a number of families in our neighbourhood with children with disabilities that I know use the playgrounds in the evenings."
Unifor Local 240, which represents employees at Harmony in Action organized the campaign to raise funds for the project. Other Windsor locals including Local 444, 2458, 200 and 195 donated to the cause to raise $16,200.
"When we found out about the second incident, we just said this is not a fluke, it's going to continue to happen and we need to step up to ensure that they could still provide a park that was safe and not vandalized for the participants," said President of Unifor Local 240 Jodi Nesbitt.
The fence should be erected next month to help protect the equipment. In the meantime, Esposito says they have installed security cameras and Windsor Police are consistently monitoring the property.
