A message from the OPP: Lock your garage

Police in one Windsor-Essex community are reminding residents that crime prevention is everyone's business.

The Ontario Provincial Police in Leamington have put out a friendly reminder to homeowners after officers noticed several homes with attached garages unlocked.

Constable Craig Hudders said officers were conducting routine patrols Tuesday night when they spotted at least four homes, near each other, that had insecure garages. The officers had to knock on doors to alert residents that their garages were open.

Hudders said in one instance, a door leading into the home was wide open. The officer had to physically enter the house and wake the occupant.

"A simple technique, such as setting a daily reminder on a cellular phone to secure the residence, can be enough to ensure your home and property are not left vulnerable to crime," said Hudders.
