ERCA issues flood watch

Flooding is possible along the Lake Erie shoreline due to strong winds in the forecast.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for shoreline properties in Amherstburg, Essex, Kingsville, Leamington and the west shoreline of Pelee Island.

Forecasts are predicting strong winds generally out of the south starting this evening, transitioning to the southwest by late tonight or early tomorrow morning. Gusts up to 70 km/h could be felt later tonight with strong wind speeds expected until morning.

With current lake levels and the predicted winds, a possibility of flooding, shoreline erosion, and damaging waves exists along the Lake Erie shoreline within those communities.

James Bryant with ERCA said people should take extra caution to avoid areas where flooding is occurring as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas during significant rainfall and wind events.

The flood watch is in effect until Thursday at 5 p.m.
