Those affected financially by the COVID-19 pandemic will have another chance to take advantage of a miracle.
Organizers of LaSalle's contribution to the June 27th Miracle food drive are once again opening up Westport Marina Thursday morning to provide Miracle Bags of food and supplies to those who have been laid off in the community because of the pandemic, particularly staff at Caesars Windsor and those in the wedding and event industry.
The marina will be open from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
"Many are in need that would not normally use the services of a food bank," read a media release. "We understand as a committee how hard-pressed and long term the job losses and business losses have been and will continue to be for many in these industries. We want to ensure employees and business owners in those industries are not suffering in silence."
In the town of LaSalle alone, 340,000 pounds of food were collected as part of the June 27th Miracle. Enough food was collected to supply the LaSalle Youth Hangout and the St. Andrew’s Food Bank for two years. At least 17 non-profit agencies were also supported along with over one hundred families in need.
A total of two million pounds were gathered across Windsor-Essex. Organizers said the event was the largest-ever one-day food drive, though the Guinness Book of Records did not sanction the event.
Any non-profit organizations in need of assistance, or anyone needing transportation to or from Westport Marina on Thursday, is asked to contact LaSalle Miracle co-chair and town councillor Sue Desjarlais.
