The Windsor Essex Children's Aid Society (CAS) is thinking inside the box to support children and families who would normally benefit from going to summer camp.
Since overnight camps are not an option due to COVID-19, the CAS has put together Summer Camp boxes for families to enjoy camp-like activities and quality time together.
"It's something to really provide children and families with something special during this very different kind of summer," said Mike Clark, manager of public relations with CAS.
The boxes will include craft supplies, summer toys, a kite, activity books, storybooks, a gift card for a picnic and ice cream and a special item selected specifically or a child’s interests. Each box is expected to cost around $150. Around 225 families will benefit from the camp boxes.
"We usually have a fundraising drive for our traditional summer camp program which didn't happen this year so to be able to put this together we're asking folks in the community if they would support camp in a box," said Clark.
Anyone interested in supporting the program can donate through the Windsor Essex Children's Aid Society website. The kits will be delivered over the next couple of weeks.
