Fatal Erskine fire caused by a lighter

Fire investigators have determined the cause of a fatal Windsor house blaze.

It happened shortly after midnight Tuesday at an apartment building on Erskine Street, between Riverside Drive East and Wyandotte Street East. Heavy smoke was pouring from the second floor by the time fire crews arrived.

Fire officials said later Tuesday morning that a woman had died in the fire. Her name has not been released.

Investigators from Windsor Fire and Rescue and the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office spent almost two days examining the damage and concluded the fire started due to the careless use of a lighter.

Damage to the apartment itself and the second-floor hallway is estimated at around $100,000.
