Transit Windsor is hoping to expand its Sunday service in the new year.
The transit service is requesting an additional $842,000 in funding to extend Sunday service later in the day and increase the frequency of buses on some routes.
"Currently on Sundays, our buses are extremely full. Quite often, we are bypassing passengers that are looking for transit service. We see this as a way to continue to grow transit in our city," said Executive Director Pat Delmore.
In 2018, ridership on Transit Windsor increased nearly 22 per cent thanks in large part to the addition of the University of Windsor transit pass.
"Those students are now not only using the bus passes to go to and from the university. They are using it throughout their evenings, they're using it on the weekends," said Delmore.
Final ridership figures for 2019 have not been calculated yet. However, Delmore estimates they've seen an increase of three to four per cent in 2019.
"That's way over the national average of one to two per cent ridership increase so we don't have the final numbers for 2019 yet but we're still anticipating a really strong ridership increase," said Delmore.
Windsor City Council will consider the funding increase during budget deliberations on January 27, 2020. If approved the changes would come into effect by mid-2020.
