Amherstburg man charged with sexual assault

A 24-year-old man has been charged with communicating with and sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

The Windsor Police Service's Amherstburg detachment said it received a call on Thursday, November 21 seeking help with sex-related offences. Officers found out that a girl under the age of 16 had been communicating for several months via social media with an older man. Over several months, the pair met in person, and some offences were committed.

The man was identified and arrested without incident on Saturday.

Dakota Doering of Amherstburg is charged with two counts each of sexual assault, sexual interference with someone under 16, and obtaining sex for consideration with someone under 16. He is also charged with one count each of communicating via the internet with a person under 16 years of age to commit a crime and invitation to sexual touching with someone under 16.

These charges have yet to be proven in court.

Police believe there is the potential for additional victims since the suspect had been communicating with the victim via social media, and they are using this incident to remind parents to monitor their children's internet habits closely.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Windsor police's Amherstburg detachment at (519) 736-2252, ext. 343. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
