Lakeshore is looking for more public input when it comes to applying for cannabis retail stores.
Lakeshore council voted to opt-out of cannabis retail stores several months ago but is now reviewing the option to opt-in and wants public consultation before it decides the future of pot stores in Lakeshore.
In December, the mayor of Lakeshore cited a need for caution and said there were too many uncertainties to dive right in. Mayor Tom Bain told BlackburnNews.com the town could always agree to it later after waiting to find out how other communities handled it. He had questions about the location of private cannabis retail stores but those have been answered. The Alcohol Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) said they may be operated in any location where retail sales are permitted. The town said if it permits private cannabis retail stores, there will be setback regulations imposed by the province of 150 metres from all schools and no one under 19 is allowed to enter the store.
As of Tuesday at noon, 59 people had answered a Lakeshore poll question asking "Do you want the sale of recreational cannabis in Lakeshore?" The results were 68 per cent in favour, 29 per cent against and three per cent undecided.
A public meeting will be held November 4, 2019 at the Atlas Tube Centre beginning at 5 p.m.
