The Downtown Mission in Windsor is offering a cooling spot during an ongoing heat wave.
The mission said the hot weather will create additional hardships for those experiencing homelessness and people living in poverty by putting them at risk of heat-related illnesses like sunstroke, dehydration, or even death because of exposure to the heat and humidity.
The Downtown Mission remains open to provide an air-conditioned space and shelter during the day and early evening for people needing relief from the heat. The mission is also offering a refrigerated fountain and bottle refill station in its dining room at 664 Victoria Ave. to give people access to a safe source of cold water.
“Our air-conditioned dining room is open all day,” said Executive Director Ron Dunn. "With these extreme conditions, we welcome individuals and families who are in discomfort and unable to get relief from the hot weather."
Dunn added the mission’s dormitories are at near capacity and if people need a safe place to sleep, he is asking them to come to the Wellness Centre at 875 Ouellette Ave. by 9 p.m.
