Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has confirmed it will build the Chrysler Voyager in Windsor.
Spokeswoman Lou Ann Gosselin told BlackburnNews.com the model is only available in the U.S. but eventually in Canada as well.
A release from the company said it is expanding its minivan lineup in 2020 to include the Chrysler Voyager. It will replace the Pacifica L and LX models.
Whether it will save the third shift at the plant still is not known. Unifor Local 444 President Dave Cassidy hopes so.
"There's hope," he said. "The Voyager is a low-lying Pacifica that hopefully will sell like crazy."
Unfortunately, the company has not said when it plans to start production in Windsor, or how big production will be.
"That's the key," he said. "I still think there's a time that we need to bridge between their extension to October 21 of the third shift, to potentially a new product or whatever else we can do to maintain that third shift."
Cassidy said he was in talks as recently as two days ago with representatives from both the federal and provincial governments and company officials.
In addition to the possibility of a new product for the Windsor Assembly Plant, discussions have been held about job sharing too.
The third shift won a reprieve earlier this week when FCA announced it would extend its elimination until October 21 because of a large, new order. Previously, it said the last day was September 30.
At that time, Cassidy told his members FCA had not rescinded that elimination.
