Officials have canceled a flood warning for the Leamington area, but Essex County might not be in the clear just yet.
The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) issued the warning Saturday afternoon after flooding was reported on Point Pelee Drive between Sturgeon Creek and Mersea Road C. On Sunday morning they canceled the warning but kept a watch in effect for all shoreline areas within the Essex Region.
"The Essex Region Conservation Authority advises that, due to the record high lake levels, a flood watch is in effect for all shoreline areas within the Essex Region, including Pelee Island," ERCA said in a news release. "Areas of concern are the low lying beach communities and shoreline areas along Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, and Lake Erie, as well as low lying areas along the downstream reaches of major tributaries."
According to James Bryant, water resources engineer for ERCA, current lake levels are surpassing record high monthly means recorded in 1986 for both Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair.
"Lake Erie is expected to continue to rise over the month of June," stated the release. "If these predictions remain accurate, then Lake Erie would set a new monthly mean record for June and at the same time surpass the all-time high for the second month in a row."
Flooding at the areas of concern will vary on a day-to-day basis, depending on wind speed and direction.
The flood watch will remain in effect until June 28, at which time officials will re-evaluate the conditions.
