Catholic School Board lays off 16 elementary school teachers

Layoff notices went out to 16 elementary school teachers with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board Friday.

Over the past two years, the board has issued 26 notices, and board spokesman Stephen Fields told BlackburnNews.com officials are confident none of the teachers will end up unemployed.

"We do have another round of positions being posted on Monday," said Fields. "If they don't get one of those positions, then they move into what we call a supernumerary position, and they can select a long-term occasional assignment from there."

Last year, the board was able to retain all the teachers that received notices.

Fields blamed fluctuating attendance and retirements at schools across the system.

"We do understand that there is a heightened sense of awareness around this issue this year, but this is actually a fairly normal part of our staffing process," he said.

He could not say how many job postings would be made available on Monday.
