An uprising against protestors in Sudan last week has hit home for Sudanese Canadians living in Windsor-Essex.
About 30 people gathered Tuesday afternoon outside Windsor City Hall to show support for the Sudanese people affected by an attack on pro-democracy demonstrators in the capital city of Khartoum. The Washington Post reported that troops loyal to the military government in Sudan surrounded, then opened fire on the protestors.
According to a media release sent out by organizers of the Windsor demonstration, Sudanese people are also reportedly being ambushed along roads in the capital and the countryside by government forces, before being robbed of money and belongings.
Demonstrators, waving Canadian and Sudanese flags, chanted slogans and heard from a guest speaker. A spokesperson for Essex MP Tracey Ramsey was also on hand, passing along a message of support.
"I am deeply troubled and concerned at the horrible massacre carried out against peaceful protestors in Sudan," Ramsey wrote. "I stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan in their pursuit of democracy and their fight against justice and corruption."
