Rescue group member faces animal cruelty charges

The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society has charged a Windsor woman with neglecting animals in her care.

The woman is a member of the Royals Animal Rescue Service.

The Humane Society said the woman faces two counts of permitting an animal to be in distress, two counts of failing to provide adequate and appropriate veterinary care, and one count of failing to comply with orders under the Ontario SPCA Act.

Melanie Coulter, the executive director of Windsor/Essex County Humane Society, said the investigation was launched after a number of dogs in the rescue's care had died, and the investigation is ongoing.

The humane society will not release the woman's name until there has been a conviction, and said all individuals facing charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The woman is expected to appear in a Windsor court on July 15.
