Labour honours two recipients for Charles E. Brooks Award

The United Way Windsor-Essex County and the Windsor & District Labour Council have a tie this year for an honour given to those who have made outstanding contributions to the community.

The Charles E. Brooks Labour Community Service Award will be handed out Nov. 16 to June Muir, of the Unemployed Help Centre and Len Campbell, former President of CAW Local 240 at the Ciociaro Club.

"Both June Muir and Len Campbell have been steadfast champions of the Windsor-Essex community, especially for those who are vulnerable and need our help," said United Way Windsor-Essex CEO, Lorraine Goddard.

The award is named after Charles Brooks who was the president of United Auto Workers Local 444 in 1977 when he was shot to death in his Windsor office by a disgruntled union member. Brooks was instrumental in the union local's continued participation in United Way campaigns and championed the construction of parks along the city's riverfront.

Past recipients of the award include former Unifor Local 444 President, Dino Chiodo, former Unifor Local 444 vice-president Rick Reaume, and Theresa Farao, former president of Unifor Local 240.
