The sod-turning for Farrow Riverside Miracle Park attracted a large and diverse crowd on Wednesday.
Donors, politicians, unions, business, athletes, and families showed up to celebrate the $2.5-million park at Wyandotte St. and St. Rose Ave. The project will have a baseball diamond for people with disabilities, an accessible playground, and a memorial cenotaph to honour local veterans.
Co-Chair Bill Kell says the field will give those with different abilities the chance to do something they've always dreamed of doing.
"It's more than just a field and a game where dreams come true, it's about making new friends, building self esteem and being included," says Kell.
Donations and grants have raised $2million so far. Construction should start in a few weeks but more fundraising is still needed to complete the task.
"The sod-turning marks another significant milestone in the goal toward completing the project," says Co-Chair Rick Farrow. "Thousands of children and their families, children with all abilities will cherish and enjoy this miracle park for years and years to come."
Councillor Joanne Gignac, who represents the ward housing the park, says it's a very proud day.
"It's an extraordinary opportunity, not just for people with handicaps but for our whole community to enjoy a facility that I think will be unparalleled across Canada," Gignac says.
