A local member of parliament wants proper labelling for textile products containing dog or cat fur.
Windsor West MP Brian Masse has introduced a bill in the House of Commons requiring products containing animal skin to be labelled accordingly. The regulation would require labelling regardless of the amount.
"The bill will actually require a textile farmer that includes the manufacturing use of animal skin, fur and hair to be identified when they are imported into Canada," said Masse on the Commons floor Monday.
Masse said Canadians have a right to know exactly what they're buying, pointing out that over 2-million cats and dogs are killed for their fur. He said these products tend to come from Asia.
The U.S., European Union, Australia and the U.K. already have laws in place banning the use of dog and cat fur completely. The Textile Labelling Act only requires identification if the product contains animal fur.
"Companies that manufacture and produce these items should be accountable for at least consumers knowing what they are purchasing for their loved ones," said Masse.
Masse also called out the majority Liberal government for not ordering an outright ban of the products.
