The University of Windsor has named a temporary successor to retiring president Alan Wildeman.
The university announced Monday afternoon that current provost and vice-president of academics Douglas Kneale would assume the role on an interim basis once Wildeman steps down on June 30.
U of W Board of Governors chairperson Penny Allen says maintaining the school's operations is a priority while the search for a permanent president continues.
"It is important to the board, on behalf of the university, that the current direction of the university is maintained while the search continues," says Allen in a statement. "We are very grateful that Dr Kneale, who understands this direction well, has agreed to step in during this interim period.”
Kneale has been provost and vice-president of academics since 2015. Previously he has served as dean of the faculty of humanities at Brock University and taught for 25 years at Western University in London.
Wildeman says there will be an interim provost moving into Kneale's position.
"I will also do all I can in the coming months to help Douglas prepare for this role he has agreed to take on," says Wildeman in a statement. "I know how committed he is to the success of the university, and I know he will give this interim role a complete and caring effort.”
The search continues for a permanent replacement for Wildeman, who announced in January 2017 he would retire as president in June of this year.
