Windsor Enforcement Blitz Nabs Phone Users

Over 100 tickets have been handed out by Windsor police in an enforcement blitz targeting distracted drivers.

The police service just completed a four-day blitz called Project Dial Tone. The focus of the blitz was to ensure drivers are not using their cell phones while on the city's streets.

According to WPS, 114 drivers were issued tickets for distracted driving during the initiative. The blitz also resulted in 184 separate traffic charges.

The initiative was introduced last week in a video hosted by WPS public information officer Sergeant Steve Betteridge. In the video, two officers patrol the area in a unit, with one officer in the back using a camera to get a picture of a driver who appears to be talking on their phone or texting. The officers then stop the vehicle involved.

A distracted driving violation may result in fines of up to $490 and three demerit points against a driver's licence.

Collisions involving distracted drivers have been on the rise throughout Ontario for several years. Law enforcement agencies say these are crashes that can be avoided if the driver is giving the road their undivided attention.

The video explaining the initiative can be seen here.
