Employees at the Windsor Star have overwhelmingly authorized a strike.
Unifor Local 240, one of the three unions representing close to 200 Star employees, confirms via their Facebook page that over 97% of those participating in a vote approve strike action. The vote took place Sunday.
The workers are also represented by Unifor 517G and the Communication Workers of America (CWA) Local 30550.
The majority of the employees, mostly part-timers, work out of the Star's printing facility off E.C. Row. The rest work at the paper's downtown offices.
The strike vote merely presents a negotiating mandate to Postmedia, which owns the Star and numerous newspapers across the country. The media company has been criticized for shutting down numerous small-town and online newspapers, while providing executives with raises and bonuses.
A strike date has not been set. Talks will continue though none have been scheduled until at least early spring.
