A new Windsor-Essex focus strategy is in place to address the opioid crisis in the region.
Public Health officials and emergency services are working to identify the immediate actions they can take that will yield results. There are four working groups dedicated to each pillar of the strategy. Those include prevention and education, harm reduction, treatment and recovery and enforcement and justice.
"We are trying to find creative ways to utilize our existing mandate and leverage each others funding with partnership, avoid duplication, avoid any duplication that is happening in the community so that we are more efficient," says Dr. Wajid Ahmed, acting medical officer of health for the Windsor Essex County Health Unit.
He says part of the strategy will be evaluating the feasibility of a supervised injection site within the city. But Ahmed also notes there are no quick fixes and there is no one thing that will help the community get out of this crisis.
