Maidstone Woman Faces Bankruptcy Fraud Charges

A 38-year-old Maidstone woman is accused of abusing the bankruptcy system and faces charges.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Integrated Bankruptcy Enforcement Unit and the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy have charged the woman with obtaining credit under false pretences and forging documents.

Investigators have not released a lot of information, but say she is expected to appear in a Brampton courtroom Friday.

The RCMP say the bankruptcy system is intended to help the unfortunate, but honest debtor. Police use a number of detection programs and complaints from creditors to track down those who would abuse the process.

Since January 2014, police have charged 39 people and four corporations with 169 offences under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and laid 129 charges under the Criminal Code. Since then, liabilities have totaled $109-million.
