Amherstburg Seeks To Switch 911 Provider

Amherstburg Town Council will consider a report Monday night to have Windsor Police Service take over its 911 service.

If it goes forward, residents will get a dispatcher in Windsor on the phone when they call in an emergency, instead of a dispatcher from the Ontario Provincial Police.

The OPP handles 911 calls for Essex County right now.

If councillors pass a motion approving the switch, it will take effect December 5, 2017.

It costs the town $12,300 a year to get 911 service with the OPP, but it will be no cost if police in Windsor provide the service. The move is expected to save the town $61,500 over five years.
