West Nile Virus Detected

The West Nile virus has been detected in Windsor-Essex for the first time this year.

A mosquito pool tested positive for the virus during routine monitoring by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

No human cases of West Nile virus have been identified in Windsor-Essex so far this year.

The health unit is reminding residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites, and remove all standing water from their properties.  Health officials say the best way to protect yourself is to use insect repellents that contain DEET or other approved ingredients when going outdoors, wear light-coloured clothes, and limit time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn.
