Amherstburg Recovering From Financial Instability

After only two nights of budget deliberations, Amherstburg Town Council has passed a budget with a 1.89% increase.

"This council has been tasked with trying to play catch up from years of lack of reserve building and investment and so like most municipalities we have these huge infrastructure deficits that we have to address," says Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo.

To that end, the capital budget includes $8.3-million of capital spending for roads, culverts and watermain projects.

DiCarlo says a lot of the budget increase comes from adding staff at the municipality.

"We continue to also struggle with this balance of needing to get the work done, and not having the bodies to do it," says Dicarlo.

The 1.89% will mean the owner of the average home worth $191,000 will pay an additional $33.88 on their tax bill this year.
